Set in urban arenas, city courtyards and graffiti-strewn lots, this breezy spin-off of FIFA 08 is faster-paced, more casual-user-friendly and $10 cheaper than its best-selling cousin. A hypnotically psychedelic presentation augments the brisk, high-energy soccer showdowns filled with stunning dribbles and flailing mid-air attacks. Dance around shipyards and rooftops defying the laws of physics to land additional goals, and you'll begin to appreciate the game for its finer points: Specifically, handling that's up there with the best of the arcade sports canon; and head-to-head support for shaming friends in trash-talking showdowns guaranteed to inspire flying insults and controllers. Thank more responsive controls and greater match fluidity than in previous installments, which let you vault off opponents or send shots soaring toward the goal without missing a beat. Gone are the prequels' corny attempts at championing diversity via cheesy commentators, in favor of a catchy global vibe that permeates both the soundtrack and seemingly hand-drawn aesthetic. Solo enthusiasts may tire of the shallow, but engaging action, and purists may balk at options to run up walls and execute gravity-defying slow-motion spinning assaults, regardless of visual impact. Even so, a sizable roster of real-world celebs (including 250-plus players from 18 teams, categorized by innate talents) and the game's zany, stunt-filled antics are bound to stoke fair-weather fans' interests. A surefire classic it isn't, but those looking for a little checkered-ball action have a great way to get their kicks.
