There's a very good game buried within the beautiful fantasy action adventure Lair, but the difficult controller will prevent many players from finding it. This PlayStation 3 exclusive employs the PS3's SIXAXIS motion-sensing control scheme built into the wireless controller, meaning you tilt the game pad in the direction you want to go. It sounds easy in theory, but it can be incredibly difficult to control. While Nintendo's wireless motion-sensing Wii Remote controller is so intuitive a child can master it, Lair is a bungled mess, since you can't choose to turn this feature off.
The story tells of a peaceful and prosperous Asylian civilization under attack by the war-hungry Mokai race and the huge creatures trained to do their bidding. You play as an Asylian warrior named Rohn -- a dragon rider and member of the elite Sky Guard who wards off the assault in the skies, over the seas and on the ground. These battles are epic in scope, with dozens of flying creatures fighting above crumbling cities, battling through hundreds of soldiers on the ground or swooping down to breathe fire on rival ships' sails so they burst into flames and sink.
Sounds like fun, but maneuvering your dragon through the air and targeting enemies proves hard to pull off; players must tilt the control in various directions in mid-flight while also pressing corresponding buttons to brake or attack. The learning curve is so steep, in fact, players might be wondering if they'll ever reach the top of the learning curve. Visually speaking, this 1080p-supported game is spectacular, not to mention the 7.1 surround sound effects and Hollywood-quality music soundtrack are also top notch. Too bad it's virtually unplayable.
