This handheld real-time strategy game from the studio behind cult smash LocoRoco features silhouetted, one-eyed tribal warriors battling giant crabs in pastel-colored wonderlands. Patapon is certainly an acquired taste, but there's a lot to like about the game's cadence-based action. By rhythmically pressing buttons to beat drums, you command your followers in battle.

As the "Almighty," a mythical being to whom the little clan of singsong-voiced warriors turns for inspiration, you'll equip followers and send them into horizontally scrolling skirmishes using swords, bows and spears. You not only have to keep time with thumping background tracks, but you also take occasional measured breaks to let your minions respond, just as drummer boys would in the old days. The 30-plus highlighted missions are varied and engaging, from capturing rival civilizations' bases to assaulting man-eating plants. Role-playing elements like collectible gear and pre-combat planning phases add further depth.

Expect to be amazed by the audiovisual presentation, with spectacular 2D animated graphics (provided by acclaimed French artist Rolito). Deep, strategic and more than a little bizarre, Patapon's will broaden your virtual horizons.
