Tomb Raider: Anniversary

After a string of disasters culminating in 2003's much-maligned Angel of Darkness, gamers ended their love affair with buxom British adventuress Lara Croft. But as quickly as they abandoned the first lady of gaming, they'll flock right back to her fan club after playing this stunning (and value-priced) remake of her original 1996 hit. Using the same software engine that fueled last year's comeback smash Legend to dazzling effect, the anniversary edition reworks a timeless classic into a game sure to satisfy your inner Indiana Jones.

Load the game and you'll notice immediate audiovisual enhancements, from swirling snowflakes to the way the heroine nimbly tumbles through the air, twin pistols blazing. But its beauty isn't just skin deep. Additional bonuses such as a portable grappling hook, enhanced controls (handy when shimmying along ledges or dodging arrow-spitting booby traps) and expanded cut-scenes offer a more comprehensive take on an already compelling storyline. While searching for a magical artifact called the scion, you'll also have more fun solving revamped puzzles or shooting it out with bats, wolves and even angry dinosaurs. From moldering ruins to deep caves filled with crumbling floors and perilous leaps between remote outcroppings, the adventure delivers big suspense, head-scratching challenges and hands-on excitement.

With this thinking man's equivalent of a summer blockbuster, you clamber up windswept Peruvian mountains and get intimate with ancient brainteasers based on grinding gears. Newcomers should adore the atmospheric approach to traditional combat, while veterans will enjoy the jaunt down memory lane. Considering the entire package goes for a song -- nearly half the cost of next-generation competitors -- it's the first time we'd honestly recommend reconnecting with an ex.
