MOVIE REVIEW:

Archival footage of Jerry Rubin (left); a sketch rendition of Abbie Hoffman (right)

Watching Chicago 10 is such a powerful, provocative and gripping experience, no wonder this terrifically innovative documentary from writer-director-producer Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture) has reawakened interest in the bloody clash between anti-Vietnam War protestors and the out-of-control Chicago Police Department during the 1968 Democratic Convention, widely televised events that polarized a nation and led to the U.S. government conducting a bizarre conspiracy trial involving such counterculture icons as Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Black Panther Party co-chair Bobby Seale and famed progressive attorney William Kunstler. Morgen's movie tackles the sprawling subject with such emotional directness and assurance that Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin -- who are planning a feature film on the same subject and have cast Sacha Baron Cohen as Hoffman -- have their work cut out for them. Chicago 10, which debuted at last year's Sundance Film Festival, happily dispenses with documentary clichés like expository narration, self-congratulatory talking heads and hot button vintage music.

Animation from the courtroom
Instead, through animation of the Marx Brothers-meet-Franz Kakfa circus-like trial sequences voiced by Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber, Hank Azaria, Jeffrey Wright, Nick Nolte and Dylan Baker juxtaposed with startling archival photographs and footage, Chicago 10 is a jumped-up, visceral new style documentary -- it crackles with immediacy. Of course, the Vietnam War era's ominous parallels with our own turbulent and trying times give Chicago 10 an even bigger punch and relevance, but when it comes to movie documentaries history has rarely seemed so relevant, let alone compellingly entertaining. Morgen and company have made quite a movie.
