Erykah Badu
Audio Clip: "The Healer" At last, here's someone trying to accomplish something new, and succeeding. Look past the obvious referents (George Clinton, Sly Stone and even that old neo-soul thing) and you'll find a compelling, messy, intelligent, complex album that is purely an expression of the present century. Badu's music runs so contrary to the traditions of present-day hip-hop and R&B that it sounds as if it were made on another planet. Rather than rely on the music she made 10 years ago, Badu pushes forward and comes up with an album we will listen to with pleasure 10 years from now. New Amerykah is a wonderful challenge to us all. A great album. -- Lee Froehlich |
