Head of Femur  
Audio Clip: "Jetway Junior" Head of Femur started out as an unlikely cross between the Beach Boys' orchestral side and XTC's manic pop, with a few prog twists and turns added to keep things interesting. The band's third album, Great Plains, may sound more earthy and punchy, but the songs themselves are business as usual. The title track stuffs a hundred ideas into less than three minutes, and "Leader and the Falcon" and "River Ramble" sound like the missing link between Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel-era Genesis (in a good way). Fortunately, somehow the kitchen sink approach doesn't weigh down relentless songs like "Jetway Junior," "Climbing Up Fire Escapes" and "Napoleon's Boots." -- Joshua Klein |
