WHO IS SHE?:
With her strong, smoky vocals and sexy guitar playing, pop hottie Courtney Jaye sounds like a musical ménage à trois between Sheryl Crow, Liz Phair and Avril Lavigne. A Deadhead in high school, Courtney later became an Ani DiFranco acolyte with a shaved head, meandering through Hawaii, Georgia and Texas with a guitar on her hip. Now a focused 27-year-old musician with a full head of hair, Jaye just recorded Traveling Light, the chick sing-along album of the summer that's filled with beautiful melodies and memorable hooks.

WHAT HAS SHE DONE?:
After years of playing small-town gigs and supporting herself with odd jobs like bartender and acupuncturist, Jaye landed a deal with Island Records in 2004. Her new album Traveling Light finds her teaming up with Matthew Sweet, former Veruca Salt guitarist Nina Gordon and the Jayhawks' Gary Louris. Sarah McLachlan, watch your back.

WHY DO WE CARE?:
Let's count the reasons: She's down to earth, she loves sports and she can teach you how to play a mean guitar. And seriously, have you seen her photo? Damn.

Playboy.com: On your new album you sing, "I'm no angel." What are some of the devilish things you've done?

Courtney Jaye: I always go for the bad boy. I've somehow managed to keep this good girl reputation, and I don't know where that comes from. I tend to get myself in trouble more than I'd like.

PB: Ever been in jail?

CJ: No, but I did get arrested for using a fake ID when I was 18. I went to a bar, and the bouncer's like, "Can you hold on for a sec?" And I just stood in the doorway. Five minutes later a cop strolls up. I was like, "Oh, shit!"

PB: Do you play other instruments besides guitar when you perform?

CJ: I've been playing some ukulele. And I have an affinity for percussion.

PB: Like cowbell?

CJ: [Laughs] No, I leave that up to my drummer. But I can play a mean cowbell.

PB: Just for yourself in the shower, right?

CJ: Yeah. [Laughs]

PB: You've been singing the national anthem a lot lately. You've performed at a Denver Nuggets game, a Cubs game and at NASCAR events. Are you a big sports fan?

CJ: I grew up with sports. My father made hockey, baseball and football merchandise. I used to hang out at [former Pittsburgh Pirates player] Dave Parker's house, and we had [former Pittsburgh Penguins players] Mario Lemieux and Paul Coffey over for dinner.
