Even though Typhoon Saloon has been around for three years, this cavernous college bar still parties with all the abandon of a wound-up freshman. Boasting four levels, two dance floors, a barrage of lights and swarms of hot bartenders, it's little wonder this San Diego hotspot's slogan is "Lose Your Inhibitions."
The Scene: Located in the heart of San Diego's gorgeous Pacific Beach neighborhood, Typhoon Saloon draws in so many undergrads from San Diego State University you'd swear it was adjacent to the student union. Since a bevy of tanned beauties flock to this 15,000-square-foot bar on weekends, you'd forgive a guy for thinking his chances of getting past first base might rival those of Barry Bonds. But don't assume that bump in the night came from a cute coed -- legend has it the bar is haunted. Many employees, including Vick, an assistant manager, have reported hearing strange noises and seeing dark figures after closing. "One night when I was closing by myself, I turned off all the lights downstairs," he said, "and when I went to do the same upstairs and then came back down, all the lights were on."
The Chicks at the Bar: San Diego is known for its gorgeous women, and the crop at Typhoon, ranging from blonde bombshells to beautiful redheads, lives up to expectations. "The girls are absolutely amazing here," said Adrian, a senior bioengineering major. "I'm surprised some of them aren't in Playboy."
When to Go: Wednesdays are the standout night at Typhoon, when National Lampoon sponsors '80s hair band Metalskool, who celebrate the era of spandex and slashed jeans. "This is the best time to party," said Vanessa, a senior communications major. "College kids pack the place and have a blast." If you're looking to start partying after afternoon classes commence, or maybe need a drink after tanning on the nearby beaches, Typhoon's Huge Happy Hour runs from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. every day of the week.
Dress Code: You don't need to look like you walked in off a runway at Typhoon, but make sure you don't walk in straight from the beach wearing just sandals and a suit. You'll want a little more mobility for the dance floor.
At the Bar: Two signature drinks keep patrons coming back for more. A special Long Island iced tea with Blue Curaçao packs an extra punch, especially since it's served in a 34 oz. mug. You'll also want to try the horny grandma, a special margarita made with a potent blend of Grand Marnier and Sauza Hornitos tequila.
