College sports are a little different when you're struggling to stay warm way up north in Anchorage, Alaska. March Madness could just as easily refer to the lack of daylight during long winter nights as it could to the annual hoops tourney. And forget tailgating in the Arctic chill -- the damn hotdogs won't stay hot, not to mention the chilly chili. But that just makes the job of the Seawolf, the University of Alaska mascot, that much more important.
Cheering on the basketball team and the school's fierce hockey squad at Sullivan Arena, the Seawolf is a shaggy beast who's surprisingly nimble on skates. Though he prefers to speak softly and carry a big hockey stick, Playboy.com was able to sit down with the Seawolf and talk about limo rides, Hollywood relations and how to fill up those long, cold nights.
Playboy.com: So what exactly is a Seawolf?
Seawolf: A Seawolf is a mythological creature that first appeared in Native American lore.
Playboy.com: Any relation to TeenWolf?
Seawolf: Yeah, he's a distant relative, third cousin on my mom's side.
Playboy.com: So, being all the way up in Alaska, you probably don't see many other mascots.
Seawolf: The only time I've seen another mascot is when Fairbanks comes down, and their mascot doesn't go on the ice. It's a long way to Alaska so we're not going to pay for another ticket.
Playboy.com: You must be the loneliest mascot around.
Seawolf: Yeah, I guess I am.
Playboy.com: Do you have any rival schools?
Seawolf: Fairbanks is the biggest one in-state. Wisconsin is our biggest out-of-state rival for hockey. A couple of years ago we had a bench brawl with them that ended up on center ice.
Playboy.com: What are the advantages of being a mascot up here?
Seawolf: Well, it's a big hockey state, which I love. And we've got the best salmon in the world. It's good eatin'.
Playboy.com: What do you do for fun during the longest nights of the year, when you only get a few hours of daylight?
Seawolf: I normally play some night hockey or skate the river.
Playboy.com: What are your signature moves?
Seawolf: I shoot T-shirts into the crowd, but I also do a few cool moves when the team scores a goal. I do a helicopter on ice and spin around with a hockey stick. I also do a mean moonwalk.
Playboy.com: What was your best moment as a mascot?
Seawolf: One time, during a playoff game, I rappelled into Sullivan Arena. That was pretty cool. One time, we also started off a game with me entering in a limo. We even had Secret Service guys running alongside the car.
Playboy.com: What was your worst?
Seawolf: One time I got jumped by some kids and pushed into the woman's bathroom. That wasn't too good.
