In smaller roles, too, Playmates seemed to ride the cultural tide -- and its new taste for tongue-in-cheek postmodern comedy. Kelly Monaco (Miss April 1997) was featured in Idle Hands, a highly caustic horror comedy about Anton, a pothead teenager with a "possessed" hand. A "bad girl" perpetually making out with her hoody boyfriend, Tiffany (Monaco) is assaulted by the wayward limb after Anton (Devon Sawa) amputates it in an attempt to stop the carnage. Playing off the slasher movie convention of ripe teen beauties dispatched by deranged killers, the film mocks that convention by making the "killer" a ludicrously roving, malevolent hand that strangles Tiffany as she has sex with her boyfriend.
Whether riffing on old TV or injecting stale movie genres with an element of self-referential humor, Nineties entertainment was all about mocking and reworking the culture that had come before. In the same way, Playmates who starred in those films chose roles that played off of the simplistically sexy pin-up image. In the Nineties, cinematic Playmates suggested devilish sensibilities lurking behind their angelic faces.
