In the 1970s, the vagina became a cause célèbre for American artists/activists. Betty Dodson used black-and-white line drawings of spread labia to illustrate the book Liberating Masturbation: A Meditation of Self-Love. She also collected images for Viva Le Vulva: Women's Sex Organs Revealed. Dotson ran consciousness raising clinics at which she would ask women to examine their own genitals in a mirror.
The 1970s also saw publication of Tee Corinne's The Cunt Coloring Book (still available from Amazon.com). When a timid publisher changed the title to Labia Flowers, sales plummeted.
In 1979 artist Judy Chicago created "The Dinner Party," an installation of 39 place settings celebrating famous women. Many of the plates show the vulva.
Oh, those Georgia O'Keefe paintings? They're flowers and clam shells, idiot. For paintings of yoni, check out Christina Camphausen's website.
