Danielle Cohn Swoons for This Amazing Arctic Monkeys Cover

A violin cover of a rock song, that's a cover of a poem.

In the era of reverb and synthesizers, sometimes, a song can tug a little harder on your heartstrings when it’s stripped of any ties to modernity. Earlier this year, a violin cover of the Arctic Monkeys’ “I Wanna Be Yours” by Joel Sunny went viral, and Playboy Creator Danielle Cohn can’t stop listening to it.

Why Dani Cohn Loves “I Wanna Be Yours” (Violin) by Joel Sunny

“I love that song, but I’m also obsessed with the violin right now…So I’ll listen to both versions back to back over and over again. I’m the type of person that can literally listen to a song over and over again and that’s like my song right now.” –Danielle Cohn

The cover of the Arctic Monkeys’ song was uploaded to TikTok by the musician Joel Sunny, and has since received upwards of 3.7 million views on that platform alone.

Sunny performs both original violin compositions and covers on his channel, which broadcasts to 1.9 million subscribers.

Funnily enough, “I Wanna Be Yours” is a cover of a cover. Sort of. The original composition of “I Wanna Be Yours” was a poem recorded by John Cooper Clarke in his 1982 album “Zip Style Method.” Funnily enough, this poem has become a mainstay at weddings in the U.K. In 2023, Clarke’s reading of the poem crossed a billion views on YouTube.

The Arctic Monkeys took the poem and made it into a song, featured in the band’s album “AM,” which released in 2013. Joel Sunny’s take on “I Wanna Be Yours,” like any great cover, breathes new life into an already fantastic song.
