Uwutofu’s Best Cosplay, from Resident Evil to Final Fantasy

Playboy Club creator Tofu is a member of the Asian Angels as well as an accomplished cosplayer. She tells Playboy how she got into the hobby and what inspires her to keep doing new costumes.

Playboy Creator Uwutofu is a bonafide cosplay queen. She sat down with us to discuss some of her best looks, from Kasumi to Bronya, and everyone in between.

Playboy: How did you get into cosplay?

Uwutofu: I’ve always been fascinated with cosplay, and once I became a content creator – a spicy content creator – I was like, you know, I’m not spicy 24/7. I want to do something that I’ve always been interested in. And that’s when I got into cosplay. Because when I was younger, I was like, “I don’t have money for cosplay. It’s expensive.” So now that I’m an adult, I’m like, “Oh, I can get into this. I have money now.”

Playboy: How long ago was that?

Uwutofu: The first cosplay I ever did was Kasumi from Persona 5 Royal. It was back in Halloween 2020. No one was trick or treating because it was the pandemic. But I still wanted to dress up, so I just dressed up and took pictures. I was like, this is my Halloween.

Playboy: Did you make the costume yourself?

Uwutofu: I did not make my cosplays. I ordered the costume, and I was so nervous, because I had never ordered a cosplay before. And then I ordered the wig from Amazon, and I had never worn a wig in my life. I thought the hardest part was probably going to be the outfit. No, it’s the wig. I think it took me an hour to be happy with the way the wig was positioned on my face.

Playboy: How did it feel for you to wear it for the first time?

Uwutofu: The moment I wore it, I was like, “Oh, something feels really fun about this.” But I was a little nervous. I think this is like, beginner cosplay syndrome, where you look and you’re like, am I lore-accurate? And I was looking and I was like, Oh, my eyes aren’t red. Or I’m like, the wig is not quite like the fictional character. So there was a sense of nervousness, but also an excitement that I have not felt in a very long time. I think it’s that same excitement when I feel like a hobby is going to stick.

Playboy: Where have you worn your cosplays and what kind of responses did you get?

Uwutofu: I’ve been to a lot of cons: Katsucon, Colossal Con, East, Nishifest, Tsumicon, Anime Expo. And I’ve won a lot of cosplays. I think the one that I do want to talk about is this gender bent cosplay of Thancred from Final Fantasy 14. It was my first cosplay ever at a con and somewhat of a niche character, and I really liked the cosplay because I knew no one else was going to do this cosplay. And I was right, no one else did.

It was really nice because I feel like the Final Fantasy 14 community is, like, a little far in between, but like when, when you see them, you see them. And when I was walking around the con, even people who didn’t know the game said, “Oh, that’s a really cool cosplay.” It was really fun.

Playboy: What are your dream cosplays?

Uwutofu: One of my dream cosplays is a League of Legends Skin called Elementalist Lux. This skin is special because in the game, you have about eight different forms, and you get to transform them as you play the game.

So my dream cosplay would be this, but it would transform into eight different forms whenever I want to so of course, it’s impossible. If you look online, there are few of the forms [that people have cosplayed], like the dark form is on there and then the regular form is on there, but, like, never all eight simultaneously.

Playboy: What cosplayers do you admire?

Uwutofu: Oh, my God, there’s, there’s so many. So in terms of appearances that I want to emulate, I really love Emir. Emir is one of my inspirations. Wanderlust is another cosplay that I really like now. I also like Taryn’s cosplay. He’s a male cosplayer and a really buff dude. So he has to make every cosplay because there are no cosplays that will probably fit him. It’s super impressive. He crunches his cosplays really fast because he’s, like, featured everywhere.
