When us Yanks think of Australia, there are a few things that always come to mind. But no amount of croc hunters, Tim Tams, or Kylie Minogues can compete with the incredibly charming marsupial known as the kangaroo. Constant globetrotter and Playboy Club model Rebecca Adam will never forget her visit to Central Australia’s The Kangaroo Sanctuary. Here’s why.
Why Rebecca Adam Loves Australia’s The Kangaroo Sanctuary
“It’s such a great place, and they do so much research. It’s mostly kangaroos that have been orphaned. And because kangaroos are marsupials, they grow up as babies in a little pouch. So, if they don’t have a mom, the next best thing is to put them in a pillowcase. And as you’re there, you get to walk around carrying the little babies in pillowcases. It’s just so cute and magical.”
The Kangaroo Sanctuary was founded in Alice Springs, Australia way back in 2011 by Chris “Brolga” Barns. It is a 188 acre wildlife sanctuary that services orphaned kangaroos, but they also have quite a few adult roos, too. At the sanctuary, kangaroos are rescued, rehabilitated, and eventually released back into the wild.
Barns’ work is not only amazing, it may just make him a household name. His story has inspired the plot of an upcoming family film, aptly named Kangaroo. This film, brought to you by the same studio that gave us Paddington, is coming to theaters in 2025. Sorry, cinemas. My Australian’s a bit rusty.
Rebecca stumbled upon The Kangaroo Sanctuary on its immensely popular Instagram page. She was instantly captivated, and planned a whole trip to Australia around visiting the breathtaking destination.
“During feeding times, we were allowed to feed the babies with a bottle,” Adam said, “It was just a once in lifetime experience. I don’t know how else to describe it.”
