If you daydream about flooring it on a Ferrari on the Autobahn, chances are, you’re one of Supercar Blondie’s 19.4 million subscribers.
Alex Hirschi, the woman behind the gigantic YouTube channel, specializes in making videos that are equal parts educational, escapist, and most of all, entertaining.
Aside from the channel, the ever-growing Supercar Blondie brand is branching out into online car auctions with SBX Cars, which touts itself as the “global premium car auction platform.”
Recently, Alex Hirschi sat down with us to gab about her work, the future of her brand, and of course, cars.
Playboy: What the favorite aspect of your work?
Alex Hirschi: I have a few. I think building the actual business out so it doesn’t just rely on me. Building it from being a content creator to an actual business that’s going to be around a lot longer than I will be: that’s what gives me the most joy.
The other thing is…when I go to car events and I see women in the industry and they come up to me and say “Listen, I’m no longer afraid, because if any guys say to me ‘What the hell are you doing here, you don’t belong here,” then I can just say “Well, the biggest content creator in cars is a woman, so you’re the idiot!”
It’s really nice for me to get that feedback from women, that they’re not afraid to get into this industry now. That gives me a lot of joy.
Playboy: What cars do you drive when you’re not working?
Hirschi: I just got my new Rolls-Royce Spectre, which I absolutely love. I specced that with a diamond black exterior and a Light Up Spirit of Ecstasy, with the Tiffany Blue and White interior.
I also have a G Wagon Brabus 800, also with a Tiffany Grey interior—I have an obsession with that. And I have a McLaren 720S and I have a Cybertruck on the way.
Playboy: How did it feel to ride the Batmobile?
Hirschi: [Laughs] Which one actually? I’ve driven a couple. It’s crazy. Over the last few years, I think I’ve driven like three Batmobiles. I didn’t even know there were that many!
Well, obviously I felt really cool. Who wouldn’t, right? You know, when everyone’s head turns and you’re like, “Yeah, I know it’s the Batmobile!” It couldn’t be cooler than this.
Playboy: What do you believe sets Supercar Blondie apart from the rest of the pack?
We appeal to a much wider audience because we don’t just talk about, like, real car geek facts. You know, only a very small number of people around the world are actually interested in all of the ins and outs of how a car works.
So for us, we try and look at a car from more of a design perspective, what’s cool, what’s new, what’s futuristic. And that kind of stuff appeals to a lot more people than just the nitty gritty car facts.
Playboy: Aside from supercars, what’s something that you’re super passionate about?
Hirschi: My dogs. I love rescuing dogs. I have six rescues. And I work a lot with animal charities. I’m not gonna have human children. I’m gonna be collecting dogs. That’s in my future. And setting up animal welfare places around the world so that I can help more animals.
Playboy: Who are some of the animal charities that you work with?
Hirschi: So I can’t name them specifically, [but] I support dog shelters in a lot of countries around the world. The UAE, in Ukraine, in Portugal, in Brazil, in the States.
Playboy: Is there a car—super or otherwise—that you believe is all hype and overrated?
Hirschi: Oh, good question! Generally, I’m not a huge Ferrari fan. I like cars that stick to the ground. Like, I’m a Lamborghini fan. And when I take off, I put my foot down. I don’t really like the back spinning out. I want to feel in control of the car.
And just when I’ve driven a few Ferraris—and this is what a lot of people love about Ferraris—I’ve found that they’re playful. You have to be very careful in controlling them. And the backend kind of slips out. I’m not personally a fan of that feeling. I like it to just to be able to floor it and [the car] just sticks like glue to the road.
Playboy: Are there any other trends you see in cars that you aren’t fond of?
Hirschi: You know, these cars…I wouldn’t say there’s one in particular, but there are a few car companies that have come out with these one seater and two seater Barchettas. I’m not crazy about them.
They’re very, very expensive. I feel like it’s kind of a little bit of a trend that I’m not sure is going to last the decade. I might be completely wrong but I’m just not a personal fan of them.
Playboy: Are there any vehicles currently on your wishlist?
Hirschi: A lot. I would absolutely love a Lotus Evija. I think they’re incredible. Just the look of them, the speed, everything. I think they’re great. I would love a Koenigsegg, particularly the Agera RS. I would love a Lamborghini Revuelto. That might be actually my next purchase. That would be awesome. I think at the moment, those are my top three.
Playboy: Can you tell me a little bit about SBX Cars?
Hirschi: Two weeks ago, we just set a new world record for the most valuable car ever sold online. And that was for the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster that was sold for $6 million.
We connected the seller and the buyer through our platform; otherwise they never would have found each other. That’s why we set up this platform is to connect these incredible collectors from all over the world and find them the rarest gems. That’s my next big venture, it’s taking up all my time.
Playboy: What’s your secret to success?
Hirschi: I think there are a few. First of all, you’ve got to take a chance. It’s not easy giving up your day job and having a regular check come in every month. Everyone wants that stability, but you’re never going to become super successful if you can’t let go of that regular paycheck and just take a chance on something new.
Give it a go and keep taking risks. Some of them are gonna pay off, some of them won’t, sometimes you’ll question yourself, “My God, what have I done?” And other times you’ll go, “I’m so thankful I did this.” It’s just a constant rollercoaster but you’ve got to stay positive and keep taking risks.
