Why Abby Thompson is Tangled up in ‘Lost’

"Lost" was the peak of water-cooler TV shows when that still existed, and Playboy Creator Abby Thompson is finally on the bandwagon.

From 2004 to 2010, few shows kept audiences hanging on every second since Lost. For every question the show answered, five more mysteries were posed. In a world with a much more saturated media landscape, Lost was perhaps one of the last true “water cooler” shows. Playboy Creator Abby Thompson is finally binging it, and seeing what all the fuss was, and is about.

Why Abby Thompson loves Lost

“There’s so many plots with a story that keeps evolving. You don’t get a lot of answers. So you’re kind of constantly questioning everything.”

Lost begins on a tropical island, where a disparate collection of the survivors of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 must fight for survival, square off against the island’s inhabitants, and make sense of their complicated lives before their fateful crash.

The show dances between the present and the past, with more layers than a French entremet and just enough supernatural elements to make a myriad of possibilities feasible.

The development of Lost had blockbuster bonafides from the beginning, considering it was a collaboration between Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof. Abrams would later helm both Star Trek and Star Wars movies, and Lindelof helmed World War Z, Prometheus, and the Watchmen series.

The pilot episode of Lost garnered 18.6 million viewers, and the show’s popularity skyrocketed. Throughout the program’s run, internet forums and the then new “social media” was abuzz with theories about the show’s direction.

Abby is currently on the sixth and final season, and has no idea how the show will end.

“It’s so hard to be able to come up with a theory, there’s so much I couldn’t even explain to you,” Abby said. “That’s how complicated the show is.”
