Why Mia loves Game of Thrones

“This whole summer I’m watching Game of Thrones with my best friend,” Mia told Playboy. “She had never seen it before, so we gotta get her all caught up now that House of the Dragon is airing. And it’s so silly and so exciting to watch it. We do marathon days where we just watch episodes back to back. We go get some snacks, some drinks and lock in and watch.”

Game of Thrones was adapted from George R. R. Martin’s book series A Song of Ice and Fire. The first book of the series, Game of Thrones, released back in 1996. After a fated five-hour meeting with Martin, show creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss pitched the show to HBO. According to the two, Martin was won over after the two correctly answered the question, “Who is Jon Snow’s mother?”

The show premiered on HBO in April of 2011 and became an instant hit, garnering 2.2 million viewers. Its popularity only escalated, with the season one finale garnering over 3 million viewers.

The series finale in 2019 clocked out at 13.61 viewers, making it the most watched HBO telecast ever. And that doesn’t even include the additional 5.7 million watching the show on streaming platforms.

In 2022, the long-awaited sequel House of the Dragon premiered on HBO, which highlights “The Dance of the Dragons,” which was a devastating civil war during the reign of House Targaryen. Mia still cheers for Daenerys during her Game of Thrones rewatch.

“Daenerys is my favorite character, that’s an easy answer,” Mia said. “I’m House Targaryen, all the way. That might be a little controversial.”

Mia is also watching House of Dragon, which just finished its second season. As two branches of the Targaryen family vie for power, Mia is squarely on one side of this struggle.

“Black house, black team for sure,” Mia said. “No one’s cheering for the greens, we don’t want that.”
