Anderson posted a wrap-up of awards season on her Instagram with several shots from the SAG Awards, where she was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for “The Last Showgirl.” In it, Anderson plays the role of Shelly Gardner, a 57-year-old showgirl whose 30-year career comes up against roadblocks due to ageism.
While Anderson did not win-the award went to Demi Moore for her performance in The Substance, a film with some similar themes-she remained grateful for the nomination, saying in her post, “Thank you to everyone who has made this all possible and for getting behind this tiny film with a big heart. This role saved my life… the catalyst to a new beginning.”
Anderson has stirred many hearts by speaking out against toxic beauty standards for women and going makeup-free in recent years, including at her appearance at the SAG Awards.
“Being an artist is solitary, lonely and full of secrets,” she wrote in a recent guest essay for People.com.
“I’ve been there. I’ve been objectified at times, and written off. I’ve made mistakes, reinvented myself time and again. And, I’ve also given up — but found that when I thought it was the end, it was truly the beginning.”
Anderson also shared hopeful words for those struggling which were very inspirational.
“Though youth, energy and beauty may be perishable — and rejection is a constant — be strong, stay soft and never give up. Harvest time comes after all you have endured, planted and put into yourself. If you have something to give, there is a place for it. There is no need to explain one’s self… because it’s unexplainable.”
