Cubs. The Bean. Italian Beef. Bill Murray. Chicago has given the world many gifts, but few are as iconic as their strange idea of what constitutes a pizza. Playboy model Vicki Vybes will never forget her first taste of the polarizing Chicago pie. Here’s why.
Why Vicki Vybes Loves the Deep Dish Pizza at Giordano’s
“I never tried it before,” Vicki told Playboy. “When they said it’s a ‘pizza pie,’ it’s really a damn pie. And I could not finish that. I took a few bites and I don’t even think I finished half of it. It was just way too much for me. But I loved it so much.”
Picture in your mind, for a second, a deep dish pizza. Thick crust, and loads of sauce, cheese, and toppings. There’s a good chance your mind pizza looks just like the pie that the good people of Giordano’s have been making since the early ’70s. Giordano’s isn’t just a pizza place, it’s a Chicago institution.
Its signature pizza is based on a recipe developed by founders Efren and Joseph Boglio, who emigrated to America from Italy. In the Northern Italian town of Torino, the Boglio Bros. were familiar with a woman simply known as “Mama Giordano,” who was renowned for her cooking abilities.
The pizza the brothers made famous was based on Giordano’s Italian Easter Pie recipe, which she made on special occasions. After almost half a century, Gordano’s has become one of the names synonymous with deep dish, in Chicagoland and beyond. Aside from their celebrated deep dish pizza, Giordano’s also makes a tasty thin crust pie. Their menu is also rife with other Chicago culinary delights like hot Italian beef.
Memorable as her Giordano’s visit was, Vicki’s recent Chicago trip was rather short, so she didn’t get to soak in all the sites like she wanted.
“I really want to go back to Chicago,” Vicki says. “I still have yet to explore and do all the stuff there is to do. There’s just so much to take in.”
