Playboy Club creator Alexa Abraxas has been passionate about music her whole life. We talk to her about her career, the artists she looks up to, and her favorite topic to talk about for hours.
Playboy: How did you get into music and how long have you been a musician?
Alexa Abraxas: I started singing at a very young age while growing up in church, and I started releasing music professionally about three years ago. I got signed with a small label and I have a manager now.
Playboy: What is your favorite type of music to create?
Alexa: So far my current music that’s out is pop, but I’m starting to lean more into some pop country and pop R&B. I’m really excited for my upcoming single, which is very Sabrina Carpenter-pop.
Playboy: How many singles have you released so far?
Alexa: I have four singles out and three more on the way. They are on all streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music. You can follow me on Instagram for updates!
Playboy: Did you always know that you wanted to be a musician?
Alexa: Yes. Since I was very young, I’ve always loved music and film. I love the arts in particular. Growing up, I would always sing and it was always embedded in me to continue in music and utilize my talents.
Playboy: What musicians are your inspiration in the industry?
Alexa: I’ve always been so inspired by Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. Those are my top two.
Playboy: What song are you currently listening to on repeat?
Alexa: This is basic, but it’s “Please Please Please” Sabrina Carpenter.
Playboy: How did you transition to become a creator?
Alexa: It was introduced to me by my friend Kelsey, who is with Playboy actually. And a few other friends mentioned it as well.
They introduced me to it and I thought it would be so much fun. I love the idea. Growing up, the Playboy bunnies were icons and I’ve always been inspired by their beauty.
The essence of Playboy and being a Playboy bunny is about the essence of a woman’s body and its beauty, so it’s exciting to be a part of that.
Playboy: Where were you born?
Alexa Abraxas: I was actually born on the island of Trinidad and Tobago, but I wasn’t raised there. As a baby, I was adopted and raised in New York City. I was raised in Manhattan my entire life and I grew up in the Upper West Side, so I’m definitely a city girl.
Playboy: What is the best piece of advice that you were ever given and who gave it to you?
Alexa: The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is from my mom. She’s just one of my biggest Inspirations and the best piece of advice she’s given me is to always believe in yourself, no matter what – and do not ever be a quitter because anything you want to do, you can put your mind to it and do it.
You just have to tell yourself you can do it and just do it. So back then she said that. But in modern day, I think most people would consider that manifestation.
Playboy: What is your health and wellness routine?
Alexa: I am super active. I work out about five six days a week and I hike a lot. When it comes to my health, I’m very particular with what I put into my body. I juice about five days a week.
I do my lemon ginger to make shots as well. I’ve very healthy diet.
Playboy: What is your favorite thing to cook?
Alexa: I love Italian food so much and it’s so hard because it’s all carbs and I try to stay away from carbs, but I just love Italian food. And I love fish as well. So just any type of fresh Italian food is my favorite thing to cook.
This is simple and delicious, but I love to cook bronzino sauteed in a little garlic and olive oil with rosemary and some capers. I’ll serve that over some mashed potatoes with a side of asparagus. It’s just perfect for me.
Playboy: What book or movie makes you deeply happy?
Alexa: I’m a movie buff and I love books. I’m currently reading the Harvard Review on self-management, which is a good book, but I think one of my favorite books would be “The Universe” by Neil deGrasse Tyson because I love astrophysics.
I’m a huge physics nerd. And “Interstellar” is my favorite movie – it’s such an incredible film. The way it was produced and the concept of it is amazing. This just all goes to show how much I love science.
Playboy: Did you go to college and study science or are you just passionate about it?
Alexa: I studied science in college, but it wasn’t astrophysics. It was biology. I think my love for astrophysics stems from just research and discovering on my own.
Playboy: What did you plan to do as your career before you decided to become a musician and a creator?
Alexa: My hope was to proceed to medical school and become a doctor. My goal was to someday become a surgeon. I was very excited about medicine growing up and I’ve always loved the human body – I think the human bodies are incredible.
What we can do with it , how complex it is and the compound of the human body is remarkable to me. However, I think my heart was always with music. So I decided to go a different route when it came to my career.
Playboy: What turns you on and what turns you off?
Alexa: My turn on is a tall, blonde gentleman. Like a prince charming type.
And I am extremely turned off by lack of ambition, lack of intelligence, smoking, and someone who doesn’t know how to carry themselves or dress well.
Playboy: What would make you ghost a potential suitor?
Alexa: I would ghost instantly if they don’t have any manners. I’ve literally left when I was on a date before because of his manners and the poor way he treated people.
I was just so turned off by that, and I was like absolutely not – there’s no way I’m going to see this person ever again. I believe in being kind. My opinion is that it’s always important to just be kind, loving and accepting of others.
Playboy: What advice would you give someone trying to break into the music industry?
Alexa: Just stick to the fact that you love to do what you do and don’t do it for fame, glory, or ego. Always remind yourself that you love to do this for you and that music is Inspiring and can inspire others, so just always stick to your true values. Of course when it comes to entering the music industry, it is one thousand percent more than anything else to be humble.
Playboy: What is a fun fact about you?
Alexa: I love history. I can literally dive into history and politics and talk someone’s ear off. Most of the time, people just don’t expect that from me – especially politics for sure, which has gotten me into trouble. A lot of the time, people don’t like young women to speak about certain topics or when you fact-check them. That’s the New Yorker in me.
