After the disastrous debate performance by President Donald Trump, MAGA Land’s two wings—bat-shit crazy, and bat-shit racist—are currently at odds. To paraphrase Lincoln, “A shithouse divided cannot stand.” It all started when Far Right polemicist and former congressional candidate Laura Loomer received criticism from Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene after a racist screed posted on X.
Laura Loomer Vs. Marjorie Taylor Greene
Loomer’s ugly post was too much for even Trump die-hards like Greene to ignore.
“This is appalling and extremely racist. It does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA,” Greene said in a tweet calling out Loomer. “This does not represent President Trump. This type of behavior should not be tolerated ever.”
To Greene’s credit, she expanded in a thread below the post that she once considered Loomer a friend and ally, and even admitted to supporting and fundraising for Loomer’s failed congressional run in 2020. Loomer, reacted as normally as any average person who’s reportedly been banned from both social media and ride-sharing apps. She claimed that the post was intended to be humorous.
You know, like classic Rickles, only without any of the charm, self-deprecation, timing, or actual jokes. I don’t want to give Greene too much credit in this regard. The congresswoman is no stranger to racist attacks, but Loomer is on a whole new level.
Greene believes Muslims should be unable to hold political office. She’s stated that the black community are “slaves to the Democratic Party.” She’s even compared Black Lives Matter activists to the Klu Klux Klan. Sure, she didn’t make a mirthless rant about the White House smelling like Tikka Masala (would that be so bad?), but her racism is very much in the same ballpark as Loomer’s.
A RETVRN to sensibility
Both of these strains of hate are welcome in MAGA Land. After all, Loomer was barking debate advice to Trump right before his infamous performance. We can likely blame her for the “they’re eating the dogs” comment that will forever be etched in American history. There are pleas from “sensible Republicans” to not give in to the conspiracy theories or the race science. To paraphrase ungenerously, “Can’t we have a return to the good old blood and soil politics where we’re at least not openly crazy?”
Pleas from conservatives commentators like Erick Erickson are begging Trump supporters not to dive too deep into conspiracy world. Good luck, hermano. To many, the stories about immigrants sweeping up cats and turning them into dinner aren’t bugs: they’re features.
I’m not going to echo these warnings, or pretend to make a plea for a “sensible Republican Party.” The rot has been there since the time of Robert Taft, with everyone including Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon feeding the beast that would eventually go on to elect Trump as its God Emperor in 2016. “Make America Great Again” wasn’t a brainchild of Trump. It was first said by Ronald Reagan.
Who do I stand with in the Laura Loomer Vs. Marjorie Taylor Greene prize fight? A bout between two hate-filled wraiths is a real Alien Vs. Predator situation, and I won’t be cheering for either racist in this fight.
As George H. W. Bush once said, “It wouldn’t be prudent.”
